PC Users Group Meetings
These are held on the fourth Friday of each month at 2pm (not always the last Friday). Meeting format is generally a presentation of software or how-to do various things, followed by a Question and Answer session.
Reading Word 2007 documents with Word 2003
This matter was raised at the September 2010 meeting. Users are having trouble opening attachments in Outlook Express and other email programs - they receive an error message saying it does not know what program to associate with the attachment file type.
This is often caused when the attachment is a Word 2007 (or later) document with file type .docx, and the Word version on the computer is 2003 or earlier. The docx file is a new format, and earlier versions of Word don't know how to handle it.
You can address this problem by downloading and installing the Compatibility Pack from Microsoft. To find out more, go to this link:

GFI Backup
The October meeting included a presentation on installing and using this freeware backup package. The following PDF file gives detailed instructions on: downloading the package from the internet, creating a restore point, installing GFI Backup, using it to backup some files and then restore a file.

If you have dial-up internet access and don't want to download this much, then bring a memory stick along to Moorleigh and we'll copy it for you.
Finding where Outlook Express files are stored
A reasonable part of a backup strategy is to include your email files. If you use Outlook Express and need to find where your email files are stored, download this PDF file for instructions.
