This course will be about the Mediterranean region, its geography and history: as its name implies, the centre of the earth.  Today we think of it as a southern adjunct to Europe, but for much of its history, its focus lay in the East.  It was the discoveries of the Renaissance which have shifted this focus: first to Europe and now to our great friend across the Atlantic.
